I also received the following:

I saw your article in CounterPunch about Stephen Abraham.

You are a historian. I recently saw a history book written by an English historian about Europe in the 20th century that began with the sentence: “In 1919 a treaty was concluded with Germany”.

As long as this type of “historian” exists I suppose it is possible for the country that caused wars since 1917 (in fact since 1905) to assert that such a thing as an unlawful combatant exists.

Bush accomplished great things, he made it clear to some in the world what the USA is, and has been, since Perry in 1853 bombarded Japanese harbours.

Yesterday Bernanke tried to explain to USA lenders that making a deal with the homeowner is no less expensive than foreclosure, and better for the USA.

A country where the monetary top man has to make speeches like this cannot exist much longer.

I'm not at all sure, as Bavendamm already wrote in 1993, that the world without the USA will be a much better world, but it cannot be much worse. (Dirk Bavendamm, ‘Roosevelt’s Krieg 1937-45, und das Rätsel von Pearl Harbor’, München, 1993)

The following came from Alfred de Zayas:

Dear Mr. Worthington,

I read your article “Guantánamo and the European Parliament” with considerable interest.

Allow me to share with you my article on “The Status of Guantánamo Bay and the Status of the Detainees,” which deals not only with the scandalous treatment of detainees but with the anomaly that the United States illegally occupies Cuban sovereign territory on the basis of a “lease agreement” imposed by force and violated in material ways by the US itself.
http://www.law.ubc.ca/files/pdf/events/2003/november/GUANTANA.pdf

A revised updated version was published in the UBC law review 2004.

Sincerely yours,
Alfred de Zayas

I also received the following from Richard Domingue:

Dear Mr. Worthington,

It cannot be missed that the military tribunal process is wildly biased. Far from presuming innocence and proving guilt, they emphasize the proving of innocence -- a practice that died during the Inquisition.

Tribunal members reported ultimately to Admiral McGarrah. Any time a Tribunal determined that a detainee was not properly classified as an enemy combatant, the panel members would have to justify their finding. There would be intensive scrutiny of the finding that Admiral McGarrah would, in turn, have to explain to his superiors. Similar scrutiny was not applied to a finding that a detainee was classified as an Enemy Combatant.

How very sad. Surely, innocent men have suffered but in the final analysis it is we, American citizens who are responsible for our own downfall. Thank you so very much for bringing this whole sordid mess to our attention. I knew that injustice has being done, I now understand just how it was done. Thank you.

After this article was published, I received the following comment from Nigel B:

Thanks for all your articles pinpointing the lies, duckings, distortions, evasions ...

Please don't imagine that people out there aren't listening - they are. Perhaps there's a sense of helplessness: Yes, but what can you do?

Keep them coming!
