This is the title of an article I wrote for “Comment is free” in today’s Guardian, looking at the obstacles to Guantánamo’s closure, which will be faced if any of the front-runners in the US presidential primaries –- Hillary Clinton, Barack Omama and John McCain, who have all expressed their opposition to the prison –- succeeds in removing George W. Bush and Dick Cheney from the White House in November.
Andy Worthington is the author of The Guantánamo Files: The Stories of the 774 Detainees in America’s Illegal Prison, which explains in detail why the prison is, as described in the Guardian article, “a self-defeating failure on an almost unimaginable scale.” The book is published by Pluto Press, distributed by Macmillan in the US, and available from Amazon — click on the following for the US and the UK.
